Upon arrival, officers found a deceased 24-year-old male, later identified as 24-year-old Jatarius Rieves, known to some as "Red." Nine others, ranging in age from 17-57, had suffered gunshot wounds ranging from non-life-threatening to severe, and were immediately transported to local hospitals.

Initial research uncovered that Rieves had an arrest record dating back to 2018 for charges including domestic violence, robbery and burglary. Despite this, he leaves behind him a family that loved him, a family that is no stranger to the agonizing pain that gun violence leaves in its wake.

While at Mobile PD, local affiliate NBC15 spoke to Rieves' aunt, Brenda Littles-Shavers. On top of losing her nephew, she is still grieving the loss of her son who was shot in September at the Bank Nightlife club on Azalea Road. He died roughly, two weeks later in the hospital and the person that put him there in the first place is still out there.

"I was totally shocked. I have lost two, one nephew died in his sleep, then I had one nephew, Jatarious Rieves, to die by gun violence, my son Derek Shavers died by gun violence. These guns in Alabama is getting ridiculous," said Shavers. "Please, if anyone know anything that led up to Derrick Shavers shooting or even my nephew, please call the police."

According to a statement from Mobile Police Department, a man in connection with the shooting is now in custody "receiving medical treatment and, upon release, will be transported to Metro Jail and charged with murder."

If anyone has any information regarding the murder of Derrick Shavers, please do not hesitate to contact Mobile, AL Police Department at (251) 208-1700.
